My Journey
Following the birth of my first son and a few months into my second pregnancy I was diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse. Although I’d known that things ‘weren’t quite right’, the diagnosis still blind-sided me on every level. (Mis)informed by several health professionals that surgery was inevitable, ‘proper’ exercise was off the table and that prolapse was a ‘one way street’, I despaired that life as I knew it was over. And in retrospect, it was! But not in a bad way…
The challenge (both physical and emotional) really forced me to ‘reshuffle’ the pack of my life. It pushed me to explore new, smarter and more mindful ways of hitting my ‘old’ exercise highs, to go ‘back to school’ and understand the dynamics of how the body works (and what can work against it), to upgrade my education in nutrition and lifestyle protocols for sustainable rehabilitation and long-term health. Ultimately, it provided me with the impetus to become an expert in first ‘fixing’ myself, and then others…
My challenge transformed into my ‘silver lining’, enabling me to forge deep connections with clients facing their own health challenges and empowering them to help themselves.
The deeper I delved and the more courage I had to speak up, the more prevalent, to varying degrees, I found these problems to be. Across all age groups, walks of life, nationalities and lifestyles, I found women suffering in silence, and too often, shame. So shocked and saddened by my findings, I put on my ‘big girl pants’ and wrote a blog. I posted it (naively) on a Facebook mums group and woke up to find over 2000 women had read it and were contacting me with their own experiences, fears and questions - and still are to this day! From that day forth, I made it my business (literally!) to become first an expert in pelvic floor and core restoration and then women’s health in a broader span.
As the RiConnect business evolved, so did I, inspired by the needs of my clients. After six years in practice I opened the RiConnect Functional Nutrition Clinic for families offering a holistic and seamless approach to health including movement, mindfulness and functional medicine.
The challenge
Chronic dis-ease has never been so prevalent and with the NHS straining under the burden of Covid-19, endless waiting lists and the UK estimating the greatest numbers of those affected by metabolic syndrome out of all the EU countries, the challenge has never been greater. BUT, armed with the right information, the tools and tips to make small but incremental positive changes and the support to ‘keep on keeping on’ towards your wellbeing goals, SO much can be done to improve your health and happiness, both now and for the future.
riconnect with yourself
So, whether you or a loved one is currently experiencing ill-health, from chronic disease to core or pelvic-floor dysfunction, I would love to hear from you and see how I can help you to help yourself, for your future self! : )
